Help DC Youth Succeed - Become a Volunteer ESL/GED Tutor Mentor at The Next Step!

The Next Step Public Charter School is currently looking for volunteers who would like to use their skills and experience to help our students - and community - succeed! By providing academic support to our GED & ESL students, volunteers play a critical role in ensuring our students have access to resources and support that can help them succeed. Oftentimes, it is that additional support that not only helps our students realize their full potential but also shows them that others also care about their successes.

As part of our volunteer tutor/mentor program we have a wide-range of opportunities available throughout both our day program (M-F, 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM) and evening program (M-TR, 6-9:00 PM). Volunteer hours throughout both of our day and evening programs are flexible. At minimum we ask that volunteers commit to one hour of tutoring per week for 1-3 months, however, shorter commitments are possible. Volunteers are also welcome to tutor for multiple hours/days, if they would like to.

Current volunteering opportunities include:

  • Helping individual or small (2-3) groups of students, in either English or Spanish, to complete reading/language arts, science, social studies or math class assignments while improving core academic skills.

  •  Helping teachers manage instructional activities directly in the classroom.

  •  Helping individual or small (2-3) groups of students further develop the ESL skills they learn in the classroom through independent learning assignments.
