Purpose of position

Engaged Instructional Aides are critical to the success of The Next Step Public Charter School.  Their role is to assist, support, and work closely with teachers, administrators, and other team members in providing educational benefit for students.  Next Step Instructional Aides engage and motivate young adults by developing positive relationships with them, assisting them in maximizing their learning potential, and supporting them as they face academic and life challenges. As members of The Next Step community, Instructional Aides value academic achievement, persistence and responsibility, structure and support, as well as collaboration and respect.

Essential Skills (including technical skills)

·      Demonstrate mastery of subject area content knowledge

·      Comfort and/or proficient with technology for planning and instruction, such as file sharing and database software, electronic grade books, interactive whiteboards, instructional websites and software

·      Display classroom management skills, including setting clear expectations, modeling desired behaviors, and monitoring student behavior

·      Commitment to working with underserved students

·      Demonstrate ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with students from diverse backgrounds

·      Demonstrate success working with students who face extraordinary challenges, including recent immigrants, teen parents, students with learning disabilities, and disengaged youth

·      Demonstrate ability to collect and use data to inform instruction

·      Demonstrate ability to infuse literacy and technology skills across the curriculum


·      Work with individual or small groups of students to reinforce learning of materials or skills initially introduced and outlined by a certified staff

·      Assists the certified staff in devising special strategies for reinforcing learning materials and skills based on a sympathetic understanding of individual students, their needs, interests, and abilities

·      Monitor work and supervise curriculum-based testing and makeup work as assigned by the certified staff

·      Serve as the key source of information and assist to any guest teacher assigned in the absence of the regular certified staff.

·      Perform clerical, classroom maintenance, and instructional duties as assigned by the certified staff

·      Notify the certified staff of any problem or knowledge of information about an individual student

·      Demonstrate ethical behavior and confidentiality about student information in school environment and community

·      Participate in an in-service training program as approved

·      Maintain a safe work environment and encourage colleagues to be safety minded in the performance of all school-related duties

·      Perform other such duties / assignments as directed by the certified staff

·      Design and deliver logically sequenced and well-paced lessons appropriate for the academic level and interests of students

·      Encourage and sustain student participation; give frequent and effective positive feedback to students

·      Make provisions for differences in student level, learning style, and interests

·      Effectively teach both small classes (3-5 students) and large (18-25 students) at a wide range of academic levels and learning styles

·      Work with students to establish and enforce a clear set of classroom rules and routines

·      Address behavior issues fairly, consistently, and without interrupting the class

·      Effectively teach academic life skills, including goal-setting, independent work, collaboration, initiative and self-advocacy, and organization

·      Solicit and utilize student feedback effectively, and meet regularly with students to review their progress

·      Complete reports on attendance, student progress, and other documentation as required by the administrative team

·      Plan responsibly for absences to ensure students continue to learn

·      Help to develop a curriculum that is relevant to the lives of students and aligned with school goals

·      Prepare bulletin board displays, exhibits, equipment

·      Supervise students in classrooms, hallways, cafeteria, and on field trips.

·      Participate actively in regular weekly meetings, including staff meetings, Student Support Team meetings, Students of Concern meetings, and Professional Development sessions

·      Develop and maintain positive and supportive relationships with all students

·      Consistently implement school-wide expectations in classrooms and common areas

·      Participate actively in special events, including field trips, community days, college tours, graduations, etc.

·      Participate actively in school responsibilities such as hallway and lunch supervision

·      Work cooperatively with colleagues to develop and implement effective and relevant policies

·      Adhere to school policies as described in personnel manual and/or staff handbook

·      Reflect upon performance, set goals for improvement, and take advantage of training opportunities to learn and implement effective strategies

  • Participate in assessment administration as needed throughout the school year
  • Participate in bi-weekly staff meetings, weekly welcoming morning meetings and any other meetings assigned in relations to the position 
  • Participate in hall monitoring
  • Actively participate in one task specific and one special event committee each trimester

Supervision and evaluation

This position will work closely with the Curriculum and Instruction Coordinator, Instructional Coaches, Assessment Coordinator.  Instructional Aides will be supervised and evaluated by the Principal.
