FLSA Status: Exempt

Hours: Flexible hours between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., during weekdays


  • Bachelor’s Degree (or working towards earning one)
  • Minimum one year working in an urban school or educational setting
  • Must be bilingual in Spanish/English
  • Knowledge GED core content, or High School core content subjects (English Language Arts, Math, Science and Social Studies)

Purpose of position

Engaged Tutors are critical to the success of students at The Next Step Public Charter School.  Their role is to tutor, support, and work closely with students who are either close to passing the GED or students who are struggling with content. Next Step tutors will engage and motivate young adults by developing positive relationships with them, assisting them in maximizing their learning potential, and supporting them as they face academic and life challenges. As guest members of The Next Step community, Tutors value academic achievement, persistence and responsibility, structure and support, as well as collaboration and respect.

Essential Skills (including technical skills)

  • Demonstrate mastery of subject area content knowledge
  • Comfort and/or proficient with technology for instruction, such as file sharing and database software, electronic grade books, interactive whiteboards, instructional websites and software, as needed
  • Display student management skills, including setting clear expectations, modeling desired behaviors, and monitoring student behavior
  • Commitment to working with underserved students
  • Demonstrate ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with students from diverse backgrounds
  • Demonstrate success working with students who face extraordinary challenges, including recent immigrants, teen parents, students with learning disabilities, and disengaged youth
  • Demonstrate ability to use data provided by teacher to inform instruction


  • Assists teachers in reinforcing learning objectives and skills based on a sympathetic understanding of individual student abilities, interests, and learning styles
  • Work with individual students or small groups of students to reinforce learning objectives or skills introduced and outlined by teachers
  • Monitor student work and help supervise curriculum-based testing and makeup work as assigned by lead teachers and or substitute teachers
  • Serve as the key source of information and assistance to substitute teachers in the absence of lead teachers
  • Notify teachers of any student misbehavior or non-compliance
  • Encourage and sustain student interest in class work; give frequent and effective positive feedback to students when working with them
  • Work with students to reinforce established classroom rules and routines
  • Solicit and utilize student feedback effectively and consult with students regularly to review progress

  • Adhere to school policies as described in personnel manual and/or staff handbook
  • Actively participate in a task-specific or special event committee each trimester

Supervision and evaluation

This is a contracted, hourly position as needed, and Tutors will work closely with the Director of Curriculum and Instruction, Instructional Coaches, Teachers and Executive Assistant.  No direct supervision or evaluation is necessary. However, the Principal has discretion as to whether or not a Tutor will continue or discontinue working with Next Step Students.
