One Mission.
The Next Step legacy was built on courage – by educators who believed in adult learners, and by students who believed in themselves even when the odds were stacked against them.
For three decades, we have:
Helped adults earn high school credentials and English proficiency
Connected learners to workforce pathways and postsecondary success
Created safe, affirming spaces rooted in dignity, respect, and belonging
Served as a trusted community anchor through times of change and challenge
Our legacy is not just measured in diplomas earned – but in confidence restored, families strengthened, and futures reclaimed.

The First Steps
*Early students participating in the Teen Parenting Program at the Latin American Youth Center.
The Next Step PCS began as the Teen Parent Program developed by the Latin American Youth Center (LAYC), created to support pregnant and parenting teens through an alternative education model centered on academics, parenting skills, self-esteem, and future planning. When Washington, D.C. authorized charter schools in 1996, The Next Step became one of the city’s first charter schools.

From its earliest years, the school operated on the second floor of LAYC. Forming a lasting partnership that continues today and expands opportunities for students through access to comprehensive, wraparound services.

Growth & Transition
*Michelle Obama visits The Next Step PCS
As our mission grew to serve all out-of-school youth, The Next Step continued to grow while staying a small, family-centered school. In 2010, the school was reauthorized for 15 years, becoming the first D.C. charter school to complete this process.

*2025 Summer Institute students
Today, The Next Step serves approximately 500 youth ages 16–30, supporting students as they earn their GED, learn English, prepare for college or trade school, and get ready for careers. As the school continues to grow, it remains committed to a small, family-centered environment where every student is supported.
